For other uses, see Save.

An auto-save or automatic save is a feature which allows the game to create and periodically overwrite set save states for the player. These can enable the player to rollback to a previous point in time if something goes wrong, though they are not recommended for this purpose in the long term.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the auto-save feature returns as a fully-implemented feture with some more albeit minor improvements. It works and is used in single-player and multiplayer across all game worlds.

The frequency for auto-saves is determined and affected by ironwolf status. If this game mode is active, the game will save once every 2 minutes. If this game mode is inactive, the game will save once every 5 minutes. The process is easily identified by an animated golden running wolf icon shown briefly in the top-right corner of the player's screen during gameplay.

Unlike Classic, the game will output its auto-save files in a far more simplified format. For example, an auto-save in single-player Lost River (Classic) would output Last Autosave (LR-C).sav, while a multiplayer auto-save in the same location would output Last Autosave (LR-C-MP).sav. Be forewarned that this format does not separate files by wolf name! It is shared across all non-ironwolves and may lead to loss of data, therefore it is highly recommended to use manual saves per-wolf and/or per-game world over relying on auto-saves in the long term.

This feature cannot be disabled, and the length of time between automatic saves cannot be configured by the player.

The message that pops up while the game is auto-saving.

In WolfQuest: Classic, auto-save returns as a fully-implemented feature with a few improvements.[1] Unlike its predecessor, the game will automatically generate a new auto-save. If a filename already exists, the game overwrites the appropriate file once every 5-10 minutes. The process is easily identified when a message appears in the top-center of the player's screen as shown on the right.

The game will always generate (and overwrite) a separate auto-save when any of the following events occur:

It works in single-player across each game world, and in multiplayer for the host. In a new game, a separate auto-save will be generated using the name of the current wolf being played and the initials of the game world. For example, a game in Lost River would output Autosave-LR-Wolfname.wolfquest to make identification of files easier.

Be warned that files will overwrite if two wolves share the same name. Prevention is as simple as making manual saves or choosing a different name for each individual wolf or save state. Similarly, players should only delete files via the in-game file manager if they are 100% certain they wish to delete data. Once deleted, it is irrecoverably lost!

In Legacy versions, this feature was first introduced with the launch of episode 2 (versions 2.0.X - 2.5.1) and was only partially implemented. It is completely unused in Amethyst Mountain, instead becoming available at very specific points of progress in Slough Creek.

The game will always generate an auto-save in the following circumstances:

  • After migrating from Amethyst Mountain to reach Slough Creek
  • Every time the cattle ranch is entered
Apart from these occurrences, auto-saves are not generated throughout normal gameplay. It is recommended for the player to make their own manual saves while playing this version to prevent inescapable mishaps!

Ironwolves & Elder Wolves[]

In the Anniversary Edition, ironwolf and elder wolf games, an auto-save is generated once every 2 minutes, thus making the game harder and more challenging. It is impossible to create a new save file in these types of games. Instead of using the game world and game type, these wolf auto-saves use the map, name of the wolf and their type in their saving mechanics. For example, an ironwolf in Slough Creek would output Wolfname (Ironwolf-SC).sav. Therefore, it is possible to overwrite an ironwolf/elder wolf auto-save file if one renames an ironwolf/elder wolf to that of another ironwolf/elder wolf, assuming they are on the same map.

Once the game has been completed, restarting requires the player to delete their iron- or elder wolf's game map save. Attempting to restart without first deleting the existing file will cause the game reload the file, preventing the game from being restarted until it is deleted.

Trivia[]

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • It is possible to force an auto-save at any time. As the game auto-saves every time the player-wolf wakes up, this can be done by pressing the sleep button twice.

Anniversary Edition & Classic Trivia

  • While useful, players should not rely too heavily on the feature. It is encouraged to manually save to create a more permanent file, if needed.

Classic Trivia

  • It is possible to force an auto-save regardless of the interval. This can be done at any time by pressing the S key and the ⇧ Shift key simultaneously.
