Cats serve as the domesticated companions — whether as "working" felines or as pets — to humans. Some are strays turned feral.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, domesticated cats are found exclusively within the Lost River mountain west game maps. All-black cats made their first appearance in October 2020 following the release of Early Access update 1.0.5d. Those with a variety of coat colors, patterns and markings were added to the game following the release of Early Access update 1.1.0f.
In the expanded Lost River, stray cats can be found in certain locations. Unlike dogs, cats do not wander or roam and will remain in a fixed location as passive entities posing no threat the player-wolf nor their pack. They spend their time lounging in a place of safety, out of reach from the threat of predators' snapping jaws and swiping claws. Although they cannot be interacted with, they are animated, but they do not make any sounds. The player-wolf is only able to find them and observe them. Most are solitary, while a very small few appear together in pairs. Certain individuals utilise head-tracking to lazily watch and follow the movements of the player's wolf.
In classic Lost River, there are no domestic cats to be found year-round.
Both Lost Rivers share the same seasonal mechanics. When the Halloween event is active, all-black cats make their appearance during the real-time month of mid-to-late October as a seasonal tie-in. From the start of November and spanning across the other eleven (11) months of the year, black cats become scarce and will disappear completely without a trace while out-of-season.In WolfQuest: Classic, the cat was quietly introduced to the game as a year-round entity. It functions similar to any perched cougar in that it cannot be reached and it reacts to the player-wolf's presence. It is the only feral or stray domesticated cat to exist in-game.
In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, there are no domesticated cats (whether feral, stray or pet) to be found in-game due to Yellowstone National Park being the only available gameplay setting.
Scent
- Main article: Scent View#Anniversary Edition
In the Anniversary Edition's scent view, toggled by pressing the key, October's all-black cats were initially scentless. As of 1.1.0f, the all-year-round variants are scented and do glow in scent view. Players can easily identify domestic cats by their green-spectrum scent trails, spores, and glow.N/A || N/A || N/A || N/A || N/A || Adult |}-->
Cats only possess a full-body scent glow. They do not generate scent spores and because they do not leave their perches to wander and roam freely, they do not generate footprint tracks or trails.

In Legacy versions, there are no cat entities, thus no scent data.
Breeds & Moggies
In the Anniversary Edition, there are a variety of breeds or moggies, all with their own unique pelages to encounter.

In modern Lost River, year-round cats appear in various locations throughout the game map. However, they are not 100% guaranteed spawns in these locations at all times of day. Discovered cats may later despawn to spawn elsewhere.[citation needed] Each location has a certain cat associated with its area. Potential spawn locations:
- Templeton - lounging on top of the overturned cart den.
- Templeton - atop a headstone in the nearby hilltop cemetery.
- Town - Tank Town district, perched on one of the staircases.
- Town - Carnival, perched atop one of the toys in the playground.
- Town - Merryweather House, perched on the upper segment of the obstructed staircase.
- Town - in the topmost window of the blue house with "No Trespassing" painted above its porch.
- Town - overhead awnings of some shops.
- Town - atop the tallest sculpture outside of the Civic Center.
- Town or Grant's Glen (pending validation) - perched on one of the construction vehicles.
- Allison Acres - allegedly visible inside houses through their windows.
- Midnight Mountain - west valley, perched atop the "werewolf"/"wolf-man" taxidermy/statue inside the Hunting Lodge.
pending further work
October's black cats appear in set locations. Unlike year-round cats, they are 100% guaranteed spawns in these locations at all times of day:
- Town - inside Vogel House.

Lost River (Classic)
In Lost River (Classic), there are a few instances of feral or stray all-black cats with green-gold eyes who appear during mid-to-late October alongside other Halloween-themed props and content. While they do possess animations, they lack scents and do not make any sounds. Year-round, these all-black cats become scarce and will disappear completely without a trace when out-of-season.
There are five (5) all-black cats in total, all of whom have 100% guaranteed spawns at all times of day in the following locations:
- Carnival - inside the Ghost House manifested over the ditch. One cat inside sitting atop the standing coffin.
- Downtown - on a white-panelled house with green tiles between Grant's Glen and the Stop & Stor warehouse. Sitting on the patio roof.
- Carnival - on the roof of an ice cream truck left abandoned on the roadside. Two cats lounging together.
- Outskirts - Randy's Donuts shop between the bridge, cemetery and motel. Sitting inside the donut.
In Classic, a black cat with jade green eyes is the only domesticated cat in the entire game. It can be found in the heart of Downtown atop the monument outside of Town Hall. It has the best odds of spawning at dusk, rarely appearing if ever at any other time of day.

- It is possible to kill the cat through glitches. However, there is no benefit to doing so, and it yields no experience.

Trivia
- Black cats have a lot of stigma. They are believed to bring bad luck, and have historically been regarded to be the companions of witches.
- In the real world, history and superstitions are a popular reason why black cats often end up in shelters.
Anniversary Edition Trivia
- The model in this game was made by GIM Studio. It is unknown whether they were commissioned by eduweb.
- An agreement between both parties allows GIM Studio retains the rights to sell this model to other developers, so it may appear in other games.
- On GIM Studio's website page for this model, four colors are shown: brown tabby, black, white, and ginger tabby. Of the four, only two have been found within the game files: brown tabby and black. Currently only the black texture is used. The other goes completely unused.
- Unlike the year-round cats, all instances of the Halloween-exclusive cat are identical. They share the same texture (notable single white claw on each foreleg) and share the same model with no variances for more distinction.
- Both the roof cat and coffin cat will watch the player, as is evidenced by their head tracking the player's position.
- If the player has a mate in tow, the cat will ignore them and focus its gaze intently on the player.
- The tabby texture reappears in the game files of the remade game, possibly as a leftover carried over from Classic's assets. It is still unused.
- The cat's removal (along with perched cougars) from the game as a permanent fixture has not been acknowledged at all by the development team.
Anniversary Edition & Classic Trivia
- The Halloween event and therefore all instances of the all-black cats, are controlled remotely with an event toggle activated and deactivated by the developer. It is not clock-and-calendar based; the player won't be able to toggle the Halloween event by changing their computer's time and date.
Classic Trivia
- The cat atop the monument in Lost River is a reference to Sophie and/or Stuart, the cats who own loboLoco and Pepper.[1]
- Aside from the different model, animations and audio clips, its behavior is identical to the instances of perched cougars.
- Despite its fierce display, it cannot do any harm to the player.
- If the player stands on the stairs outside the door of the Town Hall, the cat's name and health bar are visible. The NPC is named "Kitty".
- There are two textures for this entity in the game files, though only one of them is guaranteed to be used when it spawns. The unused texture depicts a striped gray-brown-colored tabby.
