Domestic cattle calves, cattle calves or simply cow calves, are the juvenile offspring of domesticated cows raised as livestock for meat and produce by humans or else for sale and trade.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the cattle calves are juvenile ungulate livestock animals found in a ranch.

In WolfQuest: Classic, the cattle calf is a juvenile ungulate and livestock animal residing in a ranch.

In-game, the cattle ranch is in an undisclosed location implied to be somewhere outside of the Slough Creek game map or outside of the park's protective range. Cattle always spawn inside a fenced-off barbed wire enclosure, where the calf will be hidden amongst many adult cattle. It will remain standing, grazing and occasionally looking up to inspect its surroundings. It does not flee and it will show no fear when approached by the player-wolf.

In Legacy versions, the cattle calf is a juvenile ungulate and livestock animal residing in a ranch.

Hunting

In Classic, there is only one calf spawned per visit to the ranch. If it is killed, another will spawn after leaving and re-entering.

Hunting the calf relies heavily on being able to single it out and effectively evading detection. This can be difficult due to the population of adult cows in the herd, though its small size and the difference between its coat at a closer range easily singles it out. It also makes a different moo. There is no pursuit involved in a cow calf hunt; a calf will not flee, panic, or act in defence. The player can simply locate, kill, and consume with no fight involved.

In Legacy versions, the calf can only be found exclusively in the cattle ranch. It cannot be found anywhere within Slough Creek's main map nor does it exist in any other WolfQuest map. When the player enters the cattle ranch and uses the X key to leap over the fence, they must locate the calf. This can be tricky due to the adult cattle surrounding the area, allowing the calf to blend in better.

Once found, the calf can be killed with one swipe. As soon as it's dead, the player must quickly fill their wolf's stomach and leave the ranch before they hear dogs' barking. As soon as the dogs start barking, the player must escape from the enclosure and through the purple portal. If they do not escape in time, a loud gunshot will kill the player's avatar.

If the player bumps into an adult cow, they will be chased out of the ranch and respawn near the exit portal outside of the fenced area. If the player has killed the calf and bumped into a cow accidentally, they will need to leave the area and return in order to hunt another calf.

  • Legacy cow calf texture broken

Adult cow (left), calf with correct texture (middle), calf with broken texture (right).

The texture for the calf is broken due to it being rotated 90° counter-closewise.[1] The correct rotation appears to show a visible seam on the texture.
    • It is unclear whether this was ever noticed by devs or testers, or if it was, why or how it was never fixed; time and/or budget may not have been on the developers' side during the development of the original game, yet the issue remained all through 2.7 testing and public development prior to the team moving on to the Anniversary Edition.

Trivia

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • Unlike in previous versions, there are multiple calves in the herd.

Classic Trivia

  • Bumping into an adult cow after killing and consuming the calf will not trigger the "chased out" event. This is likely to have been an oversight in the episode's original development and has been disabled to prevent it from being abused. (This is still usable in 2.5.1 and older.)

  • The calf appears to share a similar animation used by idle elk.
  • The calf and adult cow both use the same model. The calf is scaled-down.
