Coyotes are medium-sized canids with a slightly smaller build than that of an adult gray wolf, with reddish-tan fur and lighter chests, bellies, limbs, and faces. Their behavior differs between the modern game and older versions.


In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, coyotes appears as a scavenger that competes with the player for carcasses.


Behavior (Modern)[]

Coyotes are pack creatures and will usually be found in groups of one to three. They are rarely seen alone. As scavengers, they will naturally gravitate toward carcasses to fulfill their needs. They have been observed to take meat chunks from a carcass. Coyotes will actively engage with a player's wolf if they believe they have the advantage (usually in numbers or if the wolf is low in health). Killing or scaring away one coyote from the group will always result in the rest of the coyotes to flee.

Coyotes will generally not fight unless attacked or one approaches and eats from a carcass they have approached, surrounded or are actively consuming. They are also observed to hunt snowshoe hares as a pack.

Coyotes will actively attack wolf pups. When this occurs, the player will receive a warning indicating that there is a predator after their pups. Coyotes will attempt to rush forward and attempt to kill wolf pups as quickly as possible, as it takes only one bite from a coyote to kill a wolf pup. Coyotes in this state however are easily scared by an adult wolf growling and sprinting toward them, or biting them a few times. Due to their speed, and their nature of rushing in toward the wolf pups, quick reactions and observation are essential in ensuring the survival of all pups.

Coyotes currently appear in all three maps: Amethyst Mountain, Lost River, and Slough Creek.


Life stages & Behavior (Modern)[]

This section details the sex differences and life stages (age groups) for coyotes. Currently, there exists only adult coyotes in the game, and there is no distinction between sexes.


Scavenging Strategies (Modern)[]

Coyotes are a low to medium threat, depending on the difficulty and on their numbers in relation to the wolves. When playing on a higher difficulty such as on Accurate, care must be taken when fighting a larger group of coyotes as a lone wolf, as the coyotes won’t be easily frightened.


Scent (Modern)[]

Main article: Scent view#Anniversary Edition

In scent view, toggled by pressing the V key key, players can easily identify coyotes by their green-spectrum scent trails. Like other NPCs, these entities and their tracks emit scent spores which follow the direction of the wind.

For controllers, scent view is toggled via the Xbox Xbox Left Bumper button, or the PlayStation PlayStation L1 button button.

In WolfQuest: Classic, coyotes are mostly passive predators that have a smaller build, with distinctively larger ears. Killing one can take from three up to eight bites depending on the player's strength stat.

Coyotes appear in both single-player and multiplayer. They are solitary and will not roam in packs, and they present no threat to adult wolves. They will not disrupt a hunt, but they will home in on and eat carcasses that have been left unguarded, sometimes sharing a carcass with others of its kind and foxes. In scent vision, toggled by pressing the V key, players can easily identify coyotes by their green scent trails.


Behavior (Classic)[]

These animals are skittish and will attempt to maintain their distance from the player at all times. These NPCs are often regarded as pests due to them being prominent scavengers, meaning they will consume any unattended carcasses regardless of whether it generated naturally, or was hunted and killed by the player and their mate or pack. Like the player, this action gradually restores their health[citation needed] while also depleting the carcass's health/food meter.

A coyote will not attack the player or their mate and will typically flee when approached.


Amethyst Mountain (Classic)[]

During Amethyst Mountain, coyotes behave passively towards the player and their mate and flee when approached. A mate will not autonomously attack a coyote, but they will engage if the player chooses to chase and attack this predator. The only threat posed by a wandering coyote is that it may home in on and eat an unguarded carcass.

Common locations to find coyotes include the boulder to the player's right at the starting point near Dead Tree and the largest pond.


Slough Creek (Classic)[]

During Slough Creek, coyotes pose a threat to the player's pups if the den is left unsupervised. In the event that it targets a puppy, it will continue homing in on its target until it has been killed.

On harder difficulty settings, there is an increased frequency of coyotes spawning near or within den boundaries, depending on the strength of established territorial markers. It's good practice to keep your territory markers stronger than 70% to reduce overall predator invasion.

Common locations to find coyotes include a spawner hidden among a circle of bushes on the eastern side of Little Butte.


Lost River[]

In Lost River, coyotes behave like their Amethyst Mountain counterparts.

Common locations to find coyotes have yet to be documented.


Kill (Classic)[]

These predators are one of few animals that can be easily killed with little risk to the player's life or cost to the player's health or hunger, as it will not retaliate when the player bites it successfully.

When killed, a coyote's carcass cannot be consumed.[1]

In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, coyotes are passive canids that will not attack the player or their mate. Although they are predators, they do not hunt and will instead scavenge from others' unguarded carcasses. When killed, a coyote's carcass cannot be consumed.

The player's mate will not attack a coyote autonomously, but will chase and attack only when the player chases and manages to successfully bite a fleeing coyote. When bitten, a coyote will whimper and its health will decrease. Players can locate coyotes by their scent trail while in scent view, toggled by pressing the V key. They are represented by a green trail.

Coyotes are much smaller than wolves, have a slimmer build and larger ears, so they're easier to distinguish.


Amethyst Mountain (Legacy)[]

During Amethyst Mountain, coyotes are passive towards the player and their mate. If approached, they will attempt to turn tail and flee. They are fast and nimble, but they may easily be caught up to and killed by players in single-player. The same was true in multiplayer


Spawn (Legacy)[]

Coyotes have high chance of spawning near a large rock close to where the player spawns at the beginning of Amethyst Mountain.


Slough Creek (Legacy)[]

During Survival of the Pack, coyotes pose a threat to the player's pups. Once a coyote has targeted a pup, it will continue homing in on its target unless it is killed or chased far enough away.

If the player neglects to mark their territory, there is an increased chance of a coyote spawning inside the territory boundaries. The odds of one spawning vary from small with a stronger territorial marker percentage, and high with a weaker territorial marker percentage. It's good practice to keep your territory markers stronger than 85% to greatly reduce the chances of a predator spawning in your territory. 


Behavior (Legacy)[]

Coyotes are skittish and will try to maintain their distance from the player at all times. They travel alone and do not have packs. Unlike bears, this animal will not reach an impossible speed and spontaneously de-spawn. Eating carcasses will restore their health.

During the spring, they do not interact with the den and if the player is away, they will wait beside it until they have returned before beginning their attack.

  • Encountered coyotes were always male in Legacy. Females are never seen. This is unintentional and has been fixed in Classic.

  • A new coyote model was added in 1.1.0. This model was commissioned and created by a 3D artist named Lise who is based in Sweden. She was also credited by loboLoco in the Official WolfQuest Discord server as member SadEch following the devblog video's publication.
    • It is one of few models in the game not made on commission by GIM Studio.
  • The model initially used in this game from 1.0b up until 1.0.9h was made by BennyG22, aka Phillip Guerrero.
  • Coyotes will immediately kill a targeted pup with a hard shaking motion if they get close enough.
    • This tactic is a trait shared by stranger wolves. Both predators see pups as future competitors to be eliminated before they can grow up.

Legacy Trivia[]

  • In earlier Amethyst Mountain versions of the game, coyotes could hijack prey mid-hunt. This behaviour was later removed for unknown reasons. [2]

  • Coyotes are commonly referred to by the name of "Chester"[3] by players. This nickname is unofficial.
  • As coyotes are not classified as prey animals, their corpses are inedible.
