- Not to be confused with Injuries.
- For animations and emotes associated with this override, see Customization/Limpy/Animations.
"Limpy" is an override affecting all of the avatar's locomotion animations, including but not limited to its walk cycle, run cycle, sitting cycle, resting cycle, and so on and so forth. The implementation differs between major revisions of the game.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, Limpy is not available as an override in the Customize Wolf interface. Instead, it is a temporary override closely associated with the injury system which first debuted in 1.0.8l. It was teased in the April 14th 2022 developer's blog titled New Injury System and later released in-game on May 12th.
In-game, gray wolves who receive a major injury have a chance of one of their legs being hurt seriously enough to induce a temporary limp. This can affect any of their four legs though only one major and one minor leg injury may be active at a time. The latter cannot escalate until the former has healed, which will then grant the wolf a new random chance of receiving another temporary limp through continued dangerous activities.
There will be no separate overrides in the customization interface to give a wolf a permanent limp.[1]In WolfQuest: Classic, there are no events associated with this injury, but the option is available as a body customization. It is a purely cosmetic modifier affecting the avatar's left rear leg. Having been sustained as an injury, the condition is not genetic, thus pups cannot inherit it.
In Legacy versions, Limpy does not exist.
Effects[]
In the Anniversary Edition, a minor leg injury will temporarily reduce the Speed attribute by -1 point. A major leg injury will temporarily reduce the Speed attribute by -7 points, and adds a penalty to Stamina affecting its drain rate while sprinting.
When an injury heals, its physical manifestation ends and any attribute penalties that were incurred are then removed. In Classic, while this customization is active, the player's avatar will gain a +10% bonus in strength and a -10% penalty in speed. This effect is always lost when replaced by another body slot customization.
History[]
In the Anniversary Edition, from its early access debut all the way up until the release of version 1.0.8l, the then-new introduction of the inverse kinematics system which allows an avatar's feet to stay on and level with the ground presented technical difficulties and challenges for the development team. In the past, Dave had mentioned there were conflicts with the game's mix-and-match customization system.[2] With how complex this system as a whole is, there had long been technical reasons behind its exclusion which had needed to be solved for the Limpy locomotor to work properly and behave as intended before it could be brought back.
On April 14th 2022, a New Injury System developer's blog was posted and revealed an upcoming injury system, which would allow the development team to bring Limpy back into the game.

Trivia[]
- The override is based on a real wolf from Yellowstone National Park. The nickname "Limpy" or "Hoppy" varies depending on the individual or source.
- The real Limpy is deceased; he was shot and killed on March 28th 2008. His official designation was Wolf 253.[3]
- Information and media online suggests it was his left rear leg that was injured.
- "Although the Druids held their territory, 253M’s left hind leg was injured, causing a life-long limp distinguishing him from other wolves."[4]
- Limpy is the first and only modifier to be a new locomotion animation.
Anniversary Edition Trivia
- There is a small error in the April 14th 2022 developer's blog video, in which Dave says "And here is the classic Limpy! Rear right leg Limpy." at timestamp 2:50. (See general trivia about Limpy.)
- The game strikes a balance in how many legs can be majorly injured for good reason. Too severely crippled and a wolf's odds of survival plummet, and as realistic as it is, the potential leaving it to die a very slow and near-inevitable demise makes for a very morbid fate.
Classic Trivia
- The override was first teased in a short video clip by loboLoco on October 10th 2015. Forum post | Vimeo upload | Wiki upload
- This part of customization is known to be purposefully combined with a 100% strength stat to achieve a value of 110%, which is the only way to surpass the usual limit without cheating (along with setting the speed stat to 0).
