Dogs serve as the domesticated companions — whether as working canines or as pets — to humans. Some are strays turned feral.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, dogs are now absent in Slough Creek owing to the lack of a livestock ranch.

In the modern Lost River, feral dogs roam throughout the game map. They behave much like coyotes, becoming hostile in the presence of a carcass in the company of their packs, and generally being skittish and prone to fleeing during most other encounters that are devoid of nearby food. When playing story mode, they are and may sometimes appear as a potential pup predator with the same mindset as coyotes and rival wolves: to kill immediately and without hesitation if they succeed in grabbing a pup.

At the cattle ranch in modern Lost River, there is a unique chestnut Dachshund guard dog. Unlike its roaming stray or feral black-and-tan counterpart, it cannot be injured or killed. It will bark to alert the ranchers of the player's presence.

In the classic Lost River, it remains true to the original and there are no dog entities, only traces of former domestic canine habitation.

In WolfQuest: Classic, dogs do not appear in-game. At least one dog if not more is put to work as a sentry at the cattle ranch and will alert the ranchers to the presence of an intruding predator the moment it detects them, though only as an auditory experience.

In Lost River, their presence is somewhat more common in the form of doghouses in varying sizes, but they have no physical presence; it's possible they were taken with their owners when the evacuation occurred, or else were released. Any left behind either broke free or perished.[citation needed] Their fate is ultimately unknown.

In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, dogs made their first debut with the release of the Survival of the Pack episode. They exist only within the cattle ranch.

At least one, if not more dogs live on the ranch. They guard the livestock and will alert the owner or their ranch hands to the presence of an intruding predator. They do not possess any entity; when they trigger, they are an audio-only cue.

Scent

Main article: Scent View#Anniversary Edition

In the Anniversary Edition's scent view, toggled by pressing the V key key, players can easily identify dogs by their green-tinged yellow-spectrum scent trails. Like other NPCs, these entities and their tracks emit scent spores which follow the direction of the wind.

For controllers, scent view is toggled via the Xbox Xbox Left Bumper button, or the PlayStation PlayStation L1 button button.

Scent Data
Footprint Category Spore Carcass Sex Age
WQ-AE Track-dog-color Competitor Dog competitor spore Dog carcass spore Genderless Adult

In Classic, there are no dog entities, thus no scent data.

In Legacy versions, there are no dog entities, thus no scent data.

Note: Unique dogs share the same scent data. Some identifiers may be named after them.

Breeds

In the Anniversary Edition, there are a variety of breeds to encounter. Packs of feral or stray dogs may appear either while exploring the wilderness, as carcass competitors and pup predators. Whether these breeds are purebreds, high content mixes, or low content mixes is never known nor clarified in-game. This is left up to player interpretation.

Anniversary Edition • Stray/Feral Breeds
Type Debut Image
German Shepherd 1.0.9 Feral German Shepherd
Rottweiler 1.0.9 Feral Rottweiler
Dachshund 1.0.9 Feral Dachshund

Mutts

In the Anniversary Edition, mutts are a type of mongrel with an assortment of different breed genetics and no definable breed of their own, perfectly fitting the setting of Lost River and the lack of human moderation of their rendered-feral ancestors. They were newly-added in 1.1.0d. They are varying-content mixes of assorted breeds.

Anniversary Edition • Stray/Feral Mongrels
Type Descriptor Debut Image
Black-and-White mix White with black patches 1.1.0d Feral black-and-white mutt
Brindle mix Brown coat with brindle markings 1.1.0d Feral Brindle-mix mutt
Tricolor mix Black white and tan collie-beagle? mix 1.1.0d Feral tricolor Collie-Beagle? mutt

Uniques

In the Anniversary Edition, there are a small selection of unique dogs.

Ranch Guard Dog

Main article: Traps#Guard Dog
WQ-AE Domestic-Dog Guard-Dog

Ranch guard dog as it appears in-game.

Dubbed "Pinecone" unofficially by players, the guard dog is a working dog of unknown name and sex belonging to the Crooked Creek ranch. It is a domesticated chestnut dachshund residing within the grazing pastures of the homestead being fed and watered by the rancher family as a deterrent against predation of their livestock. It has been trained to bark at encroaching predators and will continually do so while following them for some distance, but it will not follow far beyond the outer barbed-wire fence.

It often appears during the early nights, spawning only after wolves accomplish one or more successful livestock kills.

Carmella

Carmella as she appears in-game.

A special named NPC, Carmella is a lost female dog (mutt variant) featured in missing poster fliers scattered around Town who doubles as an Easter egg in reference to eduweb's pet dog and resident good girl of the same appearance and name. She was left behind in Lost River and appears to have managed to adapt and survive independently of her humans despite her disadvantages of being deaf.

Bugs

Anniversary Edition Bugs

  • In multiplayer, dogs are not always synced between host and client players; clients may see a different species of dog which, when killed, may turn into another species. E.g., a killed German Shepherd may turn into a Dachshund carcass. What's actually going on? Clients are seeing the correct carcass, but not the correct live model; hosts will always see correct model. This was fixed in patch 1.0.9a.

Trivia

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • The 1.1.0d models were commissioned and created by a 3D artist named Lise who is based in Sweden.
  • The 1.0.9 models in this game were made by GIM Studio. eduweb has confirmed that they were commissioned by a different developer.
  • Dogs and wolves share the same base footprint. All dogs share the same single visually smaller track regardless of their breed.
  • The ranch guard dog is nicknamed "Pinecone" by players.[2] This may have served some inspiration for the pinecone icon created by artist Raoul as an emoji available in the game's Steam points store.
    • This dog cannot spawn if no kills are made at the ranch.
    • This dog has a high chance of spawning in the early nights. However, it is not guaranteed to appear first or ahead of other deterrents and traps.
  • The Allison Acres doghouse in classic Lost River is positioned in and near a stream or very shallow body of lake water. Using it doesn't prevent the player from laying down or sleeping.
  • None of the dogs encountered have a collar, furthering the mystery as to how long Lost River has been abandoned (if its dog population are born feral) and what year it takes place in.
    • The ranchers probably have very little reason and no legal obligation to collar and/or microchip their dog.

Anniversary Edition and Classic Trivia

  • There are some WolfQuest roleplays where dogs are featured as the main characters, usually having a radio collar as if it were a dog's collar.

Classic Trivia

  • In Lost River, only the dog houses in Grant's Glen and Allison Acres can be entered. The dog house in Downtown is small, implying that it belonged to and was used by a smaller dog breed.

Legacy Trivia

  • In 2.5, it is possible to stop the dogs' barking and bypass the instant-kill shot by running into a cow.
