For the new upcoming story format set to be used in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, see Saga.

Episodes are the campaigns in WolfQuest used to realistically and educationally portray various life stages of the gray wolf. Each setting is modelled after a real location within Yellowstone National Park. Because the project relies on funding, new episodes and updates may take some time to develop and test before they are publicly released. The implementation differs between major revisions of the game.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, episodes made their return initially with the same implementation present in Classic and Legacy versions. This plan lasted long enough to see the return of the full Amethyst and Slough episodes, which are completely rewritten and differ from their Classic and Legacy counterparts.

At the end of 2021, the WolfQuest Saga was announced. It is believed to be the replacement of the long-running episodic format WolfQuest has used since 2007, and will allow for each saga (formerly episode) to be played in any game world. When sagas release, this tabber will be preserved only for historical purposes.

Episode 1 (AE)[]

Main article: Amethyst Mountain

The first episode and game world is set on the slopes of Amethyst Mountain. This plays out much in the same way as its predecessor, albeit with differences to missions and the map's scale.

EP1 Overview (AE)[]

Players begin the game as a two-year-old dispersal wolf atop Spawn Rock. Their goals include learning how to hunt, finding and courting dispersal wolves of the opposite sex, and completing the trial period with a dispersal to make that wolf the player's mate. Once a mate has been secured, the player is then able to leave Amethyst (either via the migration point marked on the map and compass) or stay to explore, hunt, and get to know their new partner. If the player reuses a wolf that has previously completed the learn to hunt objective, this mission is skipped entirely.

This location always starts in mid-to-late fall. The calendar counts the days as they pass by until the season transitions into deep winter when the player sleeps after the last day of fall has passed. This state is permanent and lasts until the player restarts the episode.

Episode 2 (AE)[]

Main article: Slough Creek

The second episode and game world is set in Slough Creek. This plays out much in the same way as its predecessor, albeit with differences to missions and the map's scale.

EP2 Overview (AE)[]

Players begin the game atop Little Butte in the First Meadow. Their goals include establishing territory while finding den sites, choosing and relocating when necessary between den sites, raising their pups while simultaneously keeping them fed and protected from competitors, and journeying to and between rendezvous sites while pups continue to grow and develop.

This location always starts in late winter. The calendar counts the days as they pass by until the season transitions into spring and later into summer either through prolonged play after the last day of fall has passed and the player sleeps, or as part of the game's scripting by completing missions. Late summer is the permanent end state.

Episode 3 (AE)[]

Main article: Tower Fall

The third episode and game world was to be set around the Yellowstone River, and so Tower Fall was the setting chosen by the developer.[1]

On December 31st, 2016[2] Eduweb announced plans for a new episode and would reveal its location on February 2nd 2017.[3] On February 5th, a FAQ thread was posted with information about the team's plans at that time.[4]

As of December 30th 2021, it was announced that Tower Fall would no longer be an episode. Instead, it will release as a paid add-on game world, and the episode that was exclusively planned to go with it will be integrated into the base game as part of a free saga update to be playable in any supported location.[5]

WolfQuest: Tower Fall

In the first weeks of June, the pups frolic at the rendezvous site in Slough Creek while their parents bring them their first meals of fresh elk meat. When the elk herds move down into the Lamar Valley the pack follows — only to find other packs have already established territories in the valley. So the they journey further south, up and over Specimen Ridge, then down into the valley of the Yellowstone River. There, on the banks of the Yellowstone, with Tower Fall thundering nearby, the pack makes a new home amid fellow predators and plentiful prey. Here the pack will stake out a new territory, protect their family from danger, and and raise a new generation of skilled hunters.

What else will this episode include? Lots! In a future blog post we’ll talk about how we’ve compiled all the ideas from the “Ideas for new episodes” threads here and on Steam to see what aligns with this period in a pack’s life. We’ll be sharing details over the coming months as we refine our designs and start production. For now, we can say this:
  • The pups continue to grow — and so do their appetites.
  • Fortunately there are elk and moose calves around, which make easier hunting for clever wolves.
  • As the summer progresses, those pups will grow big enough to join in the hunting trips.
  • Rival wolf packs may try to kill your pups and even take over your territory — unless you’re strong and skillful enough to fight them off.

Non-Episode Locations (AE)[]

These maps have no objectives or missions beyond survival and play no part in the main campaign that WolfQuest has to offer its players -- as a result, they are optional maps not to be considered or counted as episodes.

Lost River (AE)[]

See also: Lost River.

Set outside of Yellowstone National Park in a purely fictitious location (with inspiration from real-world locations and events), Lost River is set in an unknown and desolate valley somewhere in western America. While it is possible to find and establish a bond with a dispersal wolf of the opposite sex, it is not possible to migrate to Slough Creek in the Classic game world.

A new expansion is set to release exclusively for WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition at some point in the future taking the original map and expanding upon it as well as its borders, giving players more ground to roam and explore, and presumably more activities and new mysteries to uncover. Unlike its Classic predecessor, this location will support episode arcs.[6]

In WolfQuest: Classic and Legacy versions, the game relied heavily upon an episodic structure. Each episode was set within one game world. At the conclusion of an episode, the player moves to a new location for the next phase of their wolf's life.

Neither version was ever fully completed and only two episodes were completed and released.

Episode 1[]

Main article: Amethyst Mountain

The first episode and game world is set on the slopes of Amethyst Mountain. The first publicly playable version of the game was a demo released on October 31st 2007. On December 21st 2007, the full game was made available for free via the WolfQuest website with a number of changes to the environment.

On April 28th 2008, the Deluxe edition for this episode was released, which finally saw the introduction of grizzly bears into the game and various bug fixes and revisions. The last standalone version for Amethyst Mountain was 1.6.4.

WolfQuest: Amethyst Mountain Deluxe™

Amethyst Mountain is the title of the official release for the first episode. Players begin the game as a two-year-old dispersal wolf with one goal: to seek a dispersal wolf of the opposite sex. The journey has only begun!

It is also important to learn how to survive; hunting is an essential skill to master as early as possible so as to benefit the player, and to ensure the survival of their pack in later episodes or online. An alternative is to simply scavenge from carcasses.

Episode 2[]

Main article: Slough Creek

The second episode and game world is set in Slough Creek, introduced in version 2.0.X. The first public release for this episode's initial build was January 1st 2010. No demo was ever launched for it.

On October 5th 2011, the Deluxe edition for this episode was released, which addressed existing bugs and added winning contest entries: time, weather, ravens and resting.[7] The last standalone version for Slough Creek was 2.5.1; this version (and older) is now obsolete as of 2.7.X.

WolfQuest: Survival of the Pack Deluxe™

Survival of the Pack is the title of the official release for the second episode and the direct sequel to Amethyst Mountain. Having travelled to Slough Creek with their newfound partner, this episode progresses through five missions, each one being a crucial milestone to the growth of the player's pack.

Episode 3[]

The third episode was initially planned for Classic.[8] It was shelved for a time while the team changed tactics and instead worked on rebuilding the game into the end product known today as WolfQuest 3, with the subtitle of the modernised game being Anniversary Edition. This release spelled the end of the episode's plans in Classic, as any new teasers believed to be in the Tower Fall game world (showcasing the stotting mule deer and a mule deer fawn) were shown to be using the engine of the rebuilt game.

Set outside of Yellowstone National Park in a purely fictitious location (with inspiration from real-world locations and events), Lost River is set in an unknown and desolate valley somewhere in western America. While it is possible to find and establish a bond with a dispersal wolf of the opposite sex, it is not possible to migrate to Amethyst Mountain nor Slough Creek. The story simply ends there, with the player and their partner permanently staying in Lost River.

History[]

At least three or four episodes were stated to have been planned in the past by WolfQuest Team Members.[9] This was reaffirmed by Dave in the developer's blog Where No WolfQuest Has Gone Before, where he mentioned a three episode arc.

We originally planned on having four episodes; one for each season. But because episodes are determined by funding and educational value, the number of episodes is left to be determined. We currently have plans for at least two episodes, including a 'deluxe' version of Survival of the Pack that includes Amethyst Mountain, Slough Creek, and whatever updates are chosen for version 2.5.

Trivia[]

  • When it first released, episode 2 was the only episode released with the Survival of the Pack subtitle or working title with relevance to what it would entail.
    • This did not reappear in the Anniversary Edition release of Slough Creek nor was the title scene changed. However, this old subtitle is referenced in three Core achievements, with one tier for each difficulty setting.
