The Classic coats are the outdated set of generic gray wolf coats.
- For the remastered Original set of coats in the Anniversary Edition, see Customization/Coats/Original#Anniversary Edition.
In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the Classic coats set features the old, formerly original set of 2007 coats from Classic and Legacy versions. They are generic adaptations of a gray wolf coat sampled from photography taken by loboLoco in 2006. These are standard definition textures made for the original wolf model thought to have been upscaled for use on the updated wolf model, where their age shows more clearly. These coats are included free in the base game and can only be used by player-wolves. They do not appear on NPC wolves.
In WolfQuest: Classic, the Original coats are the unchanged textures which have been in-game since WolfQuest first launched. This name is conjecture — they are not explicitly named on the Choose Your Wolf creation interface.
In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, the Original coats are a collection of five generic wolf coats. This namesake is conjecture - they are not explicitly named in the Customize Your Wolf interface. They are the only selection of textures available to players while the game was grant-funded.

Trivia[]
- The tawny coat was modelled using photograph samples of a taxidermised wolf displayed at the International Wolf Center (Ely, MN) in 2006.[1] The other coats are variations of the same texture. Gray, beige, black and white were then made afterwards, using the tawny coat as their base through repainting and/or recoloring rather than them being based on any specific individuals or packs in Yellowstone during the original game's 2002-2007 development cycle.
- Gray wolves' coats come in a variety of shades: light grays, medium grays, dark grays, beiges, browns, and occasionally blacks. This set serves all of these colors in one package.
- Unlike their cream-white Arctic relatives, "white" gray wolves are typically just light gray. Whitening fur does naturally occur and is closely associated with aging, so an older individual will gradually appear whiter-grayer the longer it survives, even if it was dark-coated in its younger years.
- Whether whitening will be an added factor as the episodes progress and the pack grows older is unknown.
- Albinism has not yet been observed nor documented in Yellowstone's wolf population, hence it is not portrayed in-game.[2]

Anniversary Edition Trivia
- It is unclear if they were upscaled for the Anniversary Edition revision of the wolf model.
- This set of coats is omitted from the NPC wolf generator due to their textures showing their age, thus they are never seen on unplayable wolves. Only player-wolves are able to use this set.
Classic Trivia
- These five coats are the only free and unlocked selection available in the 2.7 Free Trial on Mac, Windows, and mobile platforms. All other coats are locked until purchased.
Legacy Trivia
- A 2007 screenshot compilation provided by WileE, some of which would later appear elsewhere around the website as promotional media, shows some distinctive differences in two of these coats during development.
- The black coat was much darker, and appeared to have had a more purple-ish or navy-ish hue.[3]
- The white coat appeared much cleaner with less markings.[3]
- It is thought that the dark flecks/markings were added to emphasise the player-wolf is a gray wolf, not an arctic wolf.
