In-App Purchases (commonly shortened to and abbreviated as IAP) refers to optional add-on content bought in the app itself which grants additional options either for gameplay or whose purpose is aesthetic and/or cosmetic. In most games, some are free, while others will have an imposed price tag. In WolfQuest, IAP is not free; the few that are are included with the price of the game and may have been distributed as paid content in past incarnations.

All sales generate revenue which is put back into game development efforts among other things. Regardless of the game version or operating system, the base game is always tied to the device owner's Apple, Google or Amazon account and/or the player's WolfQuest game account. All purchases are bound to and associated with the respective service through a receipt issued for the transaction ID.

Looking to buy the game? See Storefronts. Looking for the old free game? See Download.

The team have confirmed that some content will be separate purchases.[1]

Anniversary Edition

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, there aren't currently any in-app purchases owing to the lack of support and availability on mobile platforms other than Steam Deck. This is subject to change in the future after Early Access development comes to a close.

Most add-ons are considered optional extras. The player is not required to purchase everything. Purchases are platform-specific; these are registered to the player's WolfQuest game account and will be usable for as long as the account remains active and is not suspended or deactivated by WQ Admin, or deleted at the request of the account holder.

Classic

In WolfQuest: Classic, the base game is called the "Free Trial", which itself is free to download without any purchases necessary. In this form, only the first episode can be played, and numerous pieces of content including the rest of the story are missing until bought through the in-app Shop. Once the Complete Game has been purchased, the player will be able to register and sign-in to a WolfQuest game account.

In-app purchases in Classic are a one-off fee provided the player's game account does not get banned or suspended by the WolfQuest Admin, or deleted at the request of the account owner.

Complete Game

In Classic, the Buy the Complete Game tab houses the content relating to the full game — story, multiplayer and map access. These options are a buy-all; they cannot be purchased separately.

Extra Customizations

In Classic, the Buy Extra Customizations tab houses optional cosmetic content — coats and modifiers. These options are presented either as separate purchases or as a buy-all. The latter of these is more cost-efficient.

Legacy

In Legacy versions of WolfQuest, the old game is not available on mobile and tablet devices and has no in-app storefront. Thanks to funding from sources such as National Science Foundation grants and donations, it was able to remain a free game.

History

While funded by grant money and donations, Eduweb nor Minnesota Zoo could not afford to waste effort on anything non-essential to the core game due to time and budget limitations. When funding ran out in 2011, Eduweb took a hiatus from the game's continued development until their return in 2014, when they returned and initially indicated plans for a mobile build. Free of the time restrictions on what they could focus their efforts on, they explored other possibilities -- since a game needs funding to be developed, one such avenue was monetary in order to continue funding the game with the interest being an ongoing lifespan for it in terms of continued updates and future development.

I'm taking a fresh look at the customization possibilities, since we know it's very important to players. I really would like to offer some nice new customization options -- but since these will take additional development effort, we'd make them into packs for in-app purchases. Generally pretty cheap per pack -- $1-$3 (though I have an idea for one that would be more special and expensive).

I do want them to hew to realism and in-game suitability. The latter means that wolf body sizes can't vary much (since that has implications for elk-biting and other things), and I don't think the personality thing fits in the customization scheme.

We can definitely have a much greater variety of coat colors/patterns. I'm hoping to have eye color, though we need to do some work to make sure it'll work on iPad 2 (that being the lowest-power tablet that the game will run on). I'd like to have several different howls to choose from. I would like to improve the tint slider as Shusuke suggests, but there are some technical limitations that may prevent that.

I've been looking for photos of scars and other distinguishing marks on wolves, particularly Yellowstone wolves, but can't find much. So if anyone can find good reference photos showing such things, please link to them here, and we'll take a look. We'd prefer to stick with Yellowstone wolves, but any wolf subspecies would be helpful. Dogs and hybrids, not so much, unless you can find some mention of a similar thing on a wild wolf.

  • In the shop interface, two images erroneously reuse the wrong image. Their intended images go unused but can be found in the game files. (This article uses the correct images for each.)
    • "Wolf Coats" erroneously reuses the "Slough Creek" preview image.
    • "Wolf Bodies" erroneously reuses the "Multiplayer" preview image.

Trivia

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • It is unknown whether Anniversary purchases will be cross-platform compatible.
    • This seems unlikely due to licensing restrictions between mobile storefronts and computer storefronts, as was partly the case for its Classic predecessor, but ultimately remains to be confirmed.
  • DLC in the Anniversary Edition is confirmed to be tethered to the owner's game account.[3] Players who have previously purchased and own DLC add-ons can see this for themselves in their Account interface.

Classic Trivia

  • Classic transactions are not cross-platform compatible due to licensing.
    • Classic premium game accounts do not store or otherwise remember purchases.
    • Content purchased from the in-game mobile Shop are tied to the user's mobile device account relative to the service that was used. (Google Play for most Android devices, Amazon for other Android devices and most Kindle devices, and the iTunes/App Store for IOS devices.)
