Moose are large prey and dangerous ungulates.

Moose are large ungulates returning in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition. They are the second largest, semi-dangerous prey animal in the game whose carcasses offer a plentiful supply of food when successfully hunted and killed. Moose are dark brown with lighter legs, long ears and an extended snout.

Behavior (Modern)[]

Moose are seen travelling alone, in groups of two (cow and calf) rarely up to three (bull, cow and calf). Their appearance is generally rare, as there are very few moose in Yellowstone National Park.

Habitat (Modern)[]

Moose currently appear in all three maps: Amethyst Mountain, Lost River, and Slough Creek.

Life stages & Behavior (Modern)[]

This section details the sex differences and life stages (age groups) for moose.

Bull Moose (Modern)[]

Bull is the correct term used to refer to male moose. They have large antlers that they could use to defend themselves from predators, and challenge other bulls. Bulls will not frighten easily, entering into a standoff if approached by just a few wolves. Males appear as often as females, with a gender ratio of 50/50.

Cow Moose (Modern)[]

Cow is the correct term used to refer to female moose. They are sometimes seen with a single moose calf. Like many mothers, cows will fiercely defend their offspring. If her calf dies, a cow moose will not immediately flee. This may pose a threat to players hoping to feast on the carcass early. Females appear as often as males, with a gender ratio of 50/50.

Moose Calf (Modern)[]

See also: Newborns#Moose or Moose calf.

Moose calves are depicted in two distinct ages in the game. Both being mobile, the younger version of Moose calf are notably weaker and slower. Once these late summer moose calves are killed, a wolf may pick up their carcass. Note that carrying these young moose will restrict a wolf's gait to a trot.

Hunting Strategies (Modern)[]

Moose do not travel in herds. They are more likely to enter into a standoff if the perceived threat is low. It is best to attack moose when they are on the run, by growling or by simply presenting a high number of wolves. Bull moose are much tougher than cow moose, and are able to use their antlers to retaliate. Cow moose will defend their calves and will enter into a standoff if its calf is under attack.

It is possible to limit the chase distance when hunting a moose. Moose will always stop sprinting if they believe that the wolf is far enough. Additionally, once the moose chooses a direction to run in, it will always run in that direction. Once the moose stops, a wolf can reposition itself so that it will be attacking the moose from the same direction the moose will run toward. This ensures an easy hit. Once out of stamina, a wolf can repeat this process: create distance from moose, moose stops, reposition in front of moose, attack. This allows a wolf to effectively limit the chase distance when hunting a moose, an essential strategy for when chasing prey at the edge of your territory, or at the edge of the map.

Since both cow and bull moose are able to kick with extremely high damage, it is best for players to limit their latch to 2 - 3 hits, with 2 hits being the most safe. Additionally, it is best to bite only when there are no other wolves biting. This ensures that the moose will not kick off and damage your wolf as soon as you latch on.

Scent (Modern)[]

Main article: Scent vision#Anniversary Edition

In scent view, toggled by pressing the V key key, players can easily identify moose by their pale blue-spectrum scent trails, with calves' tracks being a less saturated blue and adults' being more saturated. Like other NPCs, these entities and their tracks emit scent spores which follow the direction of the wind.

For controllers, scent view is toggled via the Xbox Xbox Left Bumper button, or the PlayStation PlayStation L1 button button.

Contributions for Moose in the Anniversary Edition are welcome in this gallery!

Moose are large prey animals first introduced in the 2.7.3 update. They are the largest and most dangerous prey animals in the game whose carcasses offer the most rewarding sources of food when successfully hunted and killed. Moose are dark brown with lighter legs, long ears and an extended snout.

Moose are solitary creatures which do not group together in herds. It is harder to find moose whilst exploring the wilderness as they do not have any defined zones in the same way that elk herds inhabit designated hunting grounds.

Bull and cow moose appear in single-player and multiplayer modes. In scent vision, toggled by pressing the V key, players can easily identify moose by their melrose scent trails.

Behavior (Classic)[]

They are passive towards players and their mate only from a distance; when approached, moose may stand their ground and attack the player if approached, with bulls able to kill a healthy wolf in two hits. Neither gender should be underestimated however as both can quickly and easily overpower any solitary player hunting them without the support of a pack. Moose will either stand their ground, or flee if they're too weak.

Occasionally, a pair of bulls can be found and observed fighting each other.

Carcass (Classic)[]

Main article: Carcass#Moose carcasses

Depending on the difficulty setting, carcasses' spawn rates will vary. Moose carcasses, while less frequent, will have a chance of spawning in place of an elk carcass during world generation.

A carcass will provide a decent source of health recovery to players and sustenance for pups.

Locations (Classic)[]

Amethyst Mountain (Classic)[]

During Amethyst Mountain, a pair of bulls can be observed rutting (fighting) towards the edge of the forest, not far from the player's spawn location. This event is more likely to be triggered at dawn or dusk than during broad daylight.

Common locations to find moose include the Dry Creek and Amethyst Mountain.

Slough Creek (Classic)[]

During Slough Creek, moose can be encountered anywhere on the northern side of the creek, from Sandbar Crossing to the Old Oxbow.

Lost River (Original)[]

In Lost River, moose may be encountered on the hilltop or around town.

At night, another moose has a high chance of spawning in Lost River, within the confines of the BCE Facility's walls. This moose is always a cow, and will continuously run around the area where it is imprisoned. It cannot leave and seems to remain spawned.[citation needed] This moose was added in 2.7.3 under a codename "MotL"[1], later confirmed to be Moose on the Loose by the developer[2], which had been dubbed "Floppy" by players since its discovery.

Hunting (Classic)[]

Players are now encouraged to hunt prey in order to provide themselves and their pack with food so as to ensure survival.

Solo strategies (Classic)[]

Moose are very dangerous prey to a wolf without a pack; their ability to keep facing a wolf ensures it's almost impossible to get to the back to attack it safely. As such, hunting a moose in singleplayer is nearly impossible and discouraged.

Team strategies (Classic)[]

As of 2.7, the moose is relatively easy to hunt in multiplayer games. Moose are coded to face the wolf closest to them when in a standoff, but the player is able to get extremely close without actually being attacked. This keeps the moose's backside completely exposed, allowing other players to run in and latch on.

As such, the currently used strategy is for one wolf to 'anchor' the moose, sitting as close as possible without being hit, while the rest of the pack take turns attacking the backside. Generally, biting and latching is safer than just biting and backing away, as the moose can turn instantly to defend itself against the attacking wolf, whereas latching means it can't reach you and you have time to back off when your stamina is drained.

The pack continues this process until the moose flees, which exposes it to free bites as with any other fleeing prey, before it will once again go into a standoff when at low enough health, which forces the process to repeat until the moose is killed.

Trivia[]

Anniversary Edition Trivia

  • The bull, cow and yearling models used in this game are made by BennyG22, aka Phillip Guerrero. The author of the newborn calf model is unknown.
    • As paid models, BennyG22 retains the rights to sell these models, so they may appear in other games.
  • Moose in Yellowstone are smaller than their arctic counterparts.
  • The antlers of bulls vary with the seasons just like they do in real life. For example, during the spring they have smaller, velvety antlers.
  • The flap of skin under the neck of a moose (which is present regardless of gender) is called a waddle.
  • Floppy is an Easter Egg who appears in the BCE Facility. In WolfQuest: Classic, she only has a chance of spawning at dusk and night. In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, she is a guaranteed spawn and can spawn regardless of the time of day.

  • The MotL instance is a nod to a pre-release video showing bugged moose while they were still being added to the game. "Floppy" was kept as an easter egg and occasionally spawns in the BCE Facility grounds.
    • Likely due to a misunderstanding by its author, there was even a petition to keep the bugged moose even though it is an intentional easter egg.[2]
