For information about playable species, see Wolf.

The player is the first gray wolf encountered in WolfQuest. Unlike other wolves, players may customize their wolf avatar by giving it a name and choosing its sex, pelt color, applying modifiers, tints and stats (or attributes). This is also the only player-controllable wolf in the game. A player cannot control their non-player packmates; these are handled separately by artificial intelligence programming.

Starting the game as a two-year-old dispersal, the player will become one of the two breeding wolves in a pack of their own founding in the campaignsaga in the Anniversary Edition, or episode in Classic and Legacy versions. Online, players are instead considered to be a family pack, or a pack composed of unrelated wolves depending on the host.

Name

Players may give each individual wolf avatar they create a name. This can be almost anything.

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the player-wolf can be named and later renamed from within the wolf customizer. The presence of filters in the game files suggests wolf names run on a filter to restrict bad names determined by Eduweb.

In WolfQuest 2.7, naming still appears to run on a bad names filter. Wolves can be named or renamed within the interface.[citation needed]

In Legacy versions, basic names were present. Once named, a wolf could not be renamed in-game; the player would need to rename via their operating system's file management[1] or recreate their wolf with its new name.

Limitations

In Classic 2.7, wolf names can contain as few as 1 and no more than 11 characters. Wolf names can contain alphanumeric characters but cannot include spaces, symbols, emoji and special characters.

Sex

It is possible to define whether the wolf avatar is a male or a female.

In the Anniversary Edition remake, genders have further distinction to help tell individuals apart. Males have a defined shoulder hump along their back and are generally bigger than individuals of the opposite sex. Females lack the shoulder hump and are generally smaller than males. The female of a breeding pair will exhibit signs of pregnancy during the late winter season prior to denning.

In both Classic and Legacy, there is little distinction between genders besides their size, with males being bigger and females being smaller in scale. There is no distinction between the two at any point in the game beyond stats influencing size. Ultimately both are identical throughout the game.

It should go without saying that the game fully expects a pair of wolves to be of the opposite sex; while it is possible to have a gay or lesbian pair under certain conditions, the game ignores same-sex pairs and will continue as if the player and their mate are of the opposite sex.

Mates

Mating is still a somewhat touchy subject. Players roleplaying as each other's mate is permitted, however, inappropriate mating-related behavior such as dating, flirting, and graphic depictions are prohibited. WolfQuest is not a dating service.

Controversy

For the team formerly responsible for patrolling multiplayer, see WolfQuest Report Team.

Due to abuse and inappropriate behavior in multiplayer and because mates are not part of the online experience[2], the team had removed the ability to choose a gender for the multiplayer avatar as of Survival of the Pack[3]. The team also removed numerous words from the chat lexicon in an effort to prevent players from seeking mates or stating their gender, stating that those words would not be reinstated into the lexicon[4]

This has sparked some argument and debate on the forums, but there are no intentions of reinstating gender-related words in version 2.5. It seems the decision may have been the zoo's, and would later be reverted in 2.7 and newer.

The ability for a player to define their wolf's gender was not without its problems. Gray wolves among other species of wolf are well known as animals that establish lifelong bonds with their mates, a fact that is common knowledge to people who research and study wolves.

Customization

Main article: Customization

In the Anniversary Edition, two new coat packs were added, along with a wider range of howls and improvements to other aspects of customization including eye colors.

In Classic, there are far more customizations available to the player. These include body and ear modifications, four additional sets of coats, and a selection of howls. Most of the selection is locked in the free trial and mobile builds until a transaction has been paid to use them. All coats from this version are free in its successor. Eye coloration is part of each coat's texture.

In Legacy, only a basic set of five generic wolf textures were available. Customization is next to non-existent for the avatar beyond its base texture.

Tinting

By combining tinting options with textures, the player may create a more unique avatar. Tinting is split between a pair of gray-black and orange-brown sliders.

In the Anniversary Edition, the gray-black slider influences genetic coat color, which is one of two factors for litter sizes and overall offspring health. The other is diversity.

In Classic and Legacy, coat color and tint have no effect on stats or litter sizes. It is purely an aesthetic feature.

Stats

In the Anniversary Edition, stats are superseded by a point-based attributes system.

In Classic and Legacy, there are three stats that may be adjusted with three sliders. The top of the slider represents 100%, while the bottom represents 0%. Each time any one stat is increased or decreased, another stat will decrease or increase respectively.

Strength - Defines how strong the avatar is and affects the damage output per bite. Especially helpful when hunting prey and/or predators. Increasing or decreasing this stat evenly affects the stamina and speed stats.
Stamina - Defines the duration of how long the avatar can utilize stamina for certain activities, such as running, jumping and swimming. Increasing or decreasing this stat affects the speed stat.
Speed - Defines how fast or slow the avatar runs. Especially useful for hunting and/or travel convenience. Increasing or decreasing this stat affects the stamina stat.

It is strongly advised to apply stats wisely; a wolf with too much strength will likely be outrun by prey and predators, consequently making it more difficult to hunt effectively on their own, providing benefits in a group or during social encounters. Meanwhile, a wolf with too little speed will have a lot of stamina but will take longer to reach their destination and may have trouble keeping up with others in legacy versions, which doesn't apply so much to classic due to stamina being rebalanced.

Resting allows the player's wolf to replenish lost stamina at a boosted rate.

History

For a long time, players could freely name their wolves with few restrictions imposed in Legacy multiplayer.

With the introduction of episode 2, the WolfQuest Team tweaked multiplayer to no longer use wolf names, replacing all instances of the wolf's name with the account's actual username.[citation needed] This sparked some negativity, but it was done to make reporting easier due to the amount of unusable abuse reports being submitted.[5] While this made reporting easier, it also made it slightly harder for players to find a suitable username for their wolf name without bypassing the lexicon due to it not containing many names.[6]

As of November 2015, following the release of 2.7, it is once again possible to name wolves in multiplayer; usernames are still shown when joining a game, can be used and pinged in phrase chat under the options "Players" and "Invite as Friend", and are always logged in reports submitted for the WolfQuest Admin to review as well as the output_log file. Text chat was not available in public servers at launch, though it was later enabled with the release of 2.7.2.

Trivia

  • On the game progressing normally and ignoring same-sex pairs: this is to be expected; if the game did not ignore this, then realistically the campaign would end in Amethyst Mountain. They wouldn't be able to reproduce, the next generation wouldn't be born, and those wolves would eventually fade out of existence.
    • Same-sex pairs do naturally occur in the wild. Again, the same straw is drawn.
    • In the online Raise Pups mode, a litter born to a same-sex pack will all be of one sex.
  • Prior to Amethyst Mountain Deluxe version, the white coat variation was pure white with little to no black markings. This was later changed.
    • Similarly, the black coat texture had more of a purplish hue to it. This has since been changed in favour of a more 'pure' black.

WolfQuest - How to Get Excellent Stats

A video detailing the "perfect stats" glitch.

Due to a bug, it is possible to have strength and speed set to their maximum values (+0.5) with stamina set to 0, negating the intended penalties. Contrary to the description of the video, this glitch works for both genders.
    1. Begin with a female wolf and set strength to -0.5.
    2. Switch to a male wolf and click the top of the speed stat's bar. Do not slide/drag the bar to the top!
    3. Switch back to female and raise strength -- as before, click the top of the strength stat's bar, do not slide/drag.
    4. Switch back to male and slide/drag or click the top of the bar to cap the stat. Your wolf will now have excellent stats.
  • As of version 2.5.1, it is still possible to get strength and speed of +0.5 and stamina of 0 by glitching the sliders, though it seems to have no effect on the wolf's final stats. Starting a new single-player game with the sliders set this way will result in a wolf with default stats (as though all the sliders were set to 0), which can be seen in the Pack Stats menu.
  • The wolf model was reviewed and approved by L. David Mech, aka Dr. Dave Mech, an American wolf expert.[7]
  • The white coat was originally whiter with little to no black markings.[8] This was later changed.
    • Similarly, the black coat texture had more of a purplish hue to it and had less lighter areas to it. This has since been changed.[9]
  • It was once possible to max all three stats due to a bug.
  • In the old, free game, genders only applied in single-player and was completely absent in multiplayer following the release of episode 2. Earlier versions allowed players to define their wolf's gender even in multiplayer, which also displayed the host wolf's sex in the lobby.
    • As of the updated, premium game, this no longer applies. The multiplayer lobby does not display the gender of hosts, likely to discourage mating/dating games, but playing online does now correctly show the size difference between male and female wolves and calculate further size differences based on stats.
  • In Anniversary Edition, players must name their wolf with at least two characters. Pups however could be named with a single character. Therefore, any player with a single character name must have been created as a pup turned adult.
