Single-player largely refers to the offline gameplay experience. Playing alone, the player has access to a selection of episodes (or in the Anniversary Edition, the Saga), where they will be tasked with fulfilling various conditions, many of which naturally occur throughout the lifespan of real gray wolves. The episodes themselves take place in Yellowstone National Park in the United States of America.

Campaign[]

Episode 1: Amethyst Mountain[]

Main article: Amethyst Mountain

The player begins the game as a newly-dispersed two-year-old gray wolf, wandering across the slopes of Amethyst Mountain in search of fellow dispersal wolves from unrelated wolf packs in their quest to find a mate. In this journey, the player must learn to hunt and survive long enough to complete their objectives.

Episode 2: Slough Creek[]

Main article: Slough Creek

Having succeeded in finding a mate during the fall season, the player and their new partner have migrated to Slough Creek in search of greener pastures, where they will settle and establish their pack territory. It is here where the young pack finds a den and can begin the process of growing with the birth of its first litter. With enough time and patience to feed and defend their young, the pack eventually migrates to a rendezvous site, where they will spend the rest of the summer.

Episode 3: Tower Fall[]

Main article: Tower Fall

Now that the litter has grown sufficiently, the pack has uprooted and migrated once again. It is here where the pups will observe their parents as they hunt.

This episode has been cancelled, however the gameplay will be released in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition in the Saga and the map will be available as DLC.[1]

The Saga[]

Main article: Saga

In WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the WolfQuest Saga will introduce a variety of changes to the game.[1]

  • Episode availability covers all game worlds. E.g., raise pups in Amethyst Mountain.
  • Migration may still be available, but it probably won't be forced anymore.[citation needed]
  • Player's litter will no longer be flagged as their pack's first-and-only. In other words, pups will mature into yearlings, and yearlings will mature into adult NPCs ready to either stay and assist with next year's litter among other tasks, or disperse to find a mate of their own, repeating their parents' journey before them.
  • Seasons for all core game worlds. e.g., spring and summer in Amethyst; fall in Slough Creek; spring and summer in Tower Fall.

...and more!

The WolfQuest Saga will build upon or completely replace the previous episodic format.

Beyond Yellowstone[]

Few other locations are playable outside of the park.

Lost River[]

Main article: Lost River
One such location is the fictitious Lost River, which marks the first time a released map has branched outside of the park. Set instead in a desolate valley abandoned by mankind, the player's only task here is to find a mate. Even after completing their given objective, the pair cannot migrate, nor can they establish a pack in the valley, as it is deemed too unsafe to do so. All the small pack can do is explore and continue to survive.

Main article: Lost River (Expansion)
An expanded Lost River map is planned for WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition as paid DLC. In this map, the player and their mate will be able to raise pups, unlike the Classic version. The Saga is also planned to be available for the expansion, but the player will be limited to this map only and will not be able to migrate to others.[citation needed]

Online Campaigns[]

Main article: Multiplayer/Game Types

As of 2.7 and WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, the full second episode can be played online with other players.

In the Anniversary Edition, competitive player-versus-player is planned for the future.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Development had always been determined by funding received from NSF Grants and donations. Original plans indicated that there were to have been four episodes, with one entry for each season.[3] As of 2014, this is no longer the case.
