Versions define each build and release of WolfQuest by number, name, or development codename.

To check which version of the game is currently installed, players can go to the splash (title or main menu) screen. See each section for the specifics.

Like any other game, there may be bugs and glitches. This is especially true for old revisions which are no longer being developed. Some issues are harmless, while others have game-breaking potential. It is not uncommon to see fixes and improvements to performance or compatibility with each new release, but some attempted fixes can result in new problems.[1]

Versions

This section lists all known versions of the game; the list may be incomplete. All contributions are welcome! Cream text highlights player-submitted notes that are not present in the official changelog for that version; this is subject to change with future updates made by the team, not necessarily discoveries in the current release. These may be addressed officially at a later date.

Anniversary Edition

WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, sometimes called WolfQuest 3 or WolfQuest 3: Anniversary Edition, is the second premium revision of WolfQuest, rebuilt anew from the ground up. This brand new and fully modernised take on the classic game features many improvements over previous revisions, including a full codebase rewrite, a wide range of refinements, further improvements to content introduced in 2.7, brand new content and game mechanics and other such quality-of-life changes owing to the success of sales from the previous iteration.

Development began in 2016-2017 and remains active to this day. This game continues to expand upon its predecessors' wolf ecology experience like never before.

The button in the lower-left corner of the main menu scene displays the installed version. Pressing it will reveal the changelog or patch notes in-game.

Classic

Classic builds display their version on the splash (title or main menu) scene. It is the text centered beneath the buttons. The first line will include version number and build date. The second line details copyright information.

WolfQuest: Classic, formerly known as WolfQuest 2.7, is the first premium revision of WolfQuest which sought to refresh and address issues with the 2011 legacy version while also porting the game to mobile and tablet platforms. eduweb returned to the project after a hiatus from the project in 2014 after receiving Minnesota Zoo's blessing to continue development of the project, this time funded out of eduweb's own pocket. It would benefit from some much-needed bug fixes, added a variety of options to wolf customization, included a new fictitious map and a handful of other new content and quality of life improvements. This game was released to the public in November 2015.

Development was postponed during March 2017 to make way for its modernised successor: WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition. Some time after its successor launched into Early Access, it was renamed.

Legacy

Main article: Versions/Legacy
For update history, see Versions/Legacy/Updates.

Legacy builds display their version on the splash (title or main menu) scene. It is the text centered beneath the buttons. The first line will include version number and build date. The second line details copyright information. The background image differed for major episodic releases.

While not officially titled as such, WolfQuest: Legacy, also known as WolfQuest 1 for the Amethyst-only releases or WolfQuest 2 following the inclusion of the Survival of the Pack episode, refers to the game during the project's earlier years. These builds were published from 2007 up until 2011. They were released at no cost to players and distributed freely from wolfquest.org thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation among other supporters.

Development ceased in 2011 after project funding ran out. It was succeeded by WolfQuest: Classic in 2015.

Notes

These notes apply across all versions unless otherwise stated.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer service has some limitations.

In the Anniversary Edition, the multiplayer service features some form of version checking to isolate the lobby into version-specific lobbies. Players playing older versions won't be able to connect to players playing newer versions so that no conflicts arise from features not present in the older code or revisions present in newer code. It's always a good idea to stay up-to-date to be able to play with others and to enjoy what latest features the game has to offer both online and offline.

Builds released into the beta release channel will sometimes (but not always) be compatible with the stable release. This is usually be noted by the developer via patch notes as well as being mentioned in-game on the main menu after booting into the beta build of the game.

In Legacy versions, the multiplayer service would only work for the most up-to-date build. Players on outdated builds could not see or connect to servers on newer versions hosted in the same lobby. This was easily remedied by updating to the most recent release. As of December 2018, Legacy multiplayer is no longer in service.

  1. The update from 2.5 to 2.5.1 is the best example of potential fixes causing new problems. Many of the problems caused were addressed and resolved in 2.7. They were never fixed in the free game.
