WolfQuest: Classic, formerly known as WolfQuest 2.7, is the first update to the game since October 2011.  It is a separate project from 2.5.1 and all previous versions in the respect that it will be the first game in WolfQuest's history to require a one-off payment, as confirmed by the WolfQuest Team. A single-use registration key is issued for third-party WolfQuest game accounts with all purchases, and the launcher is distributed only through Itch.io. Steam does not utilise the launcher and will instead rely on Valve's own platform for downloads and updates, while Humble Bundle provides only a Steam key. Versions older than 2.5 were all available for free from the moment they were made available on the website by the development team after all testing had finished and the game had been finalized.

2.7.0 and newer builds are available on Windows and Mac computers and IOS, Kindle and Android mobile devices. Both versions benefit from past and future patches.

Features

There are a number of new features introduced with the update, including a number of bug fixes present in the previous version(s).

  • Rendered or particle fur or "fuzz"; visible on all wolves, bears, coyotes, elk and hare.
  • Customization options, such as new coat colors.
    • Other special customizations. (Radio collar, scars, injuries/deformations... etc.)
  • Dynamic wind affects scent trails and changes hunting tactics!
  • Reworked and improved AI behaviors for all NPCs.
    • Elk and the mate are much smarter about avoiding obstacles.
    • Healthy/strong cow elk will stand and defend themselves, much like the bull. Weaker elk will still flee.
  • Dispersal wolves (potential mates) are determined by the player-wolf's experience.
  • Multiplayer Improvements has been switched to photon back-end to allow for more robust MP sessions.
    • Also features the full Slough Creek episode: raise young pups with the help of friends!
    • Private games allow voice chat and text chat (filtered only through a naughty words list), while public games are restricted to phrased chat.
  • Lost River, an all-new map set in a fictional location outside of Yellowstone National Park.
  • Achievements[4] to be earned while playing if logged into an account.
  • Refined auto-saving[5].
  • A more expressive range of emotes.
  • Graphical improvements to pre-existing Legacy game world environments which have been ported forward. (Mac/Win versions only.)

Extra Content

Add-ons

Main article: Add-ons

Add-ons refer to separate paid content. On computers, they are usually handled and referred to as downloadable content (or DLC), while on mobile platforms, they are usually handled within the app or through its related store page and referred to as in-app purchases (or IAP) or in some cases, microtransactions (MTX). In WolfQuest's case, they are one-off purchases per account.

Naturally, these are purely optional extra features; they are not required to play this game. Buying them simply serves as a way to support the developer. They offer no benefits and serve only for vanity purposes. All revenue earned through add-on sales will be put back into the project.

In-App Purchases

On the 28th of December 2014, Dave confirmed that in-app purchases would be available within the mobile platforms.[6] This is a logical decision due to the team having used their own resources to fund 2.7. IAP is not present in the computer versions for technical reasons.

Demo

The free trial edition was unveiled and officially launched via Itch.io on November 12th 2015.[7] In March 2016, it also went live as a free download via the Steam store.

The trial offers new and returning players the full Amethyst Mountain episode in single-player, original coats and a total of eight howls. Players cannot equip new coats or customizations, progress to Slough Creek, nor can they access or explore Lost River in the demo.

Pricing

When 2.7 was first announced, it became clear early on that the new game would be a one-time purchase.[8] While this is indeed true on computer operating systems, mobile and tablet devices cannot buy the full game directly from their device's app store. They must do so through the in-game Shop interface to perform in-app purchases, which in itself does not have a single buy-all to unlock everything in one swift transaction. DLC had been planned, but ended up being scrapped due to there being issues with getting it to work with the legacy codebase.[citation needed]

At its launch during November 2015, WolfQuest 2.7 cost $10 USD or its equivalent in other countries' currencies. Unfortunately, United States Dollars can be expensive in other countries due to conversion rates, leading to some complaints and minor backlash. To compensate, Eduweb runs end-of-month contests regularly, allowing anyone unable to purchase the game to win a full, free copy, among other prizes. There are no plans to make this version of the game available for free beyond the Free Trial.[9]

Pricing is subject to occasional changes due to the premium WolfQuest game being a bundle deal. Improvements have generally been the reason for increases, though this applies more to the Anniversary Edition than it does to 2.7, and although rare, sales are generally responsible for temporary decreases, allowing for a better deal.

Price Changes

  • November 17th 2015 - Full Windows and Mac release, costing $10 USD.
  • July 25th 2019 - Price increased to $15 USD following the public early access launch of the Anniversary Edition remake, which would from that point forth be bundled with 2.7.[10]
  • December 30th 2020 - Price increased to $20 USD following the public early access release of the Anniversary Edition Slough Creek episode. It is permanent base game content.[11]
  • May 27th 2021 - Price dropped temporarily to $14.99 USD as part of a Steam sale.[12]

Release & Distribution

Almost a week after the demo/trial version was made available, the full version launched on the 17th. Purchasing the game through Itch.io grants players the ability to throw in a tip to support the project. This version is not directly distributed from wolfquest.org.

Itch.io

On November 18th 2015, Eduweb announced the release of the paid full version on Itch.io. Purchasing the game through Itch.io grants customers a free Steam key and the ability to offer a tip to support the project and its future development.

Buying the game through Itch.io is recommended as they only take a smaller cut from the team's sales plus all customers receive a complimentary Steam key to redeem at no extra cost from the popular client by Valve, who take a bigger cut.

Steam

On December 10th 2015, Eduweb announced that 2.7 had been pushed to Steam Greenlight and urged players to vote for the game if they were interested[13]. By December 23rd, WolfQuest was successfully Greenlit.

On March 25th 2016, WolfQuest was officially launched on the store. Within hours of release, it reached the top of the "Popular New Releases" chart list.[14]

Trivia

  • This updated version officially succeeded the depreciated "Legacy" game (v2.5.1).
    • 2.7 is considered a financial success. The money generated through its sales funded its successor — WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition.
    • New episodes were stated to be a possibility through strong sales.[26] While this was proven true in that the developer would go on to further develop the game's main campaign for its successor, no new episodes would be developed for release in Classic.
    • Players can help this process along by spreading the word about WolfQuest!
  • Eduweb has funded the app entirely out of their own resources. All purchases will not only help them make their investment in the project back, but this will also help determine development to extend the project's future. This is a gamble on their part- one that they are hopeful will pay off.
  • A first to the project, 2.7 supports patches. This means the application may download and install new data, keeping the game up-to-date automatically whenever available. This should be taken as a grain of salt until the WolfQuest Team have posted confirmation.
    • Itch.io customers receive a launcher with which to update their game. The launcher is not present in the Steam release and is absent from all mobile builds. This is due to each platform's own built-in self-updater capabilities through the proprietary client and store apps, respectively.
  • The mobile edition received a number of delays throughout its long development, which began at some point in 2014.
